NSEW

This is a video my teammate, Chris Mueller, put together to show how NSEW works:

PROCESS

NSEW is a digital magazine for the adventurer in all of us. It brings local, accessible content to users with a modern look and feel.

Concept

As a group, we created a moodboard to get on the same page about the look and feel of NSEW.

In our competitive analysis, which included magazines specific to birding, the outdoors in general, and magazines generally well known for their design aesthetic.  We identified 5 areas we wanted NSEW to exemplify:

  • Minimal – The magazine uses a simple and clean visual style
  • Tranquil – The magazine conveys a sense of calm and peacefulness
  • Narrative – The magazine uses personal narratives to present information to the reader
  • Visual – The magazine uses photographs and other visual elements to dictate the reading experience
  • Local – The magazine features articles that are local to the reader’s location

Personas

We developed 3 personas to describe our target user base for NSEW.

Interaction

The idea behind NSEW’s navigation is that each article is laid out in a long, horizontal strip that the user moves left and right.  The article “strips” are stacked on top of each other in order according to the issue’s table of contents.

NSEW has 2 main modes: 1 for reading articles and 1 for navigating all of the articles within an issue of the magazine.  While being read, an article fills the screen and the user moves it left and right to read.  To navigate across articles in the magazine, the user can open a menu and press a button to zoom out into a “bird’s eye view” of the entire magazine, represented as all of the article strips stacked on top of each other.

Prototyping

I built a paper prototype that demonstrated to user testers how the navigation would work in NSEW.

Building the Final Product

NSEW was brought to life as a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation which shows how the navigation works and a PDF example of an article laid out in Adobe InDesign.
